Midnight Camellia Black is a rare organic black tea we tasted and loved in the countryside in Shizuoka Prefecture, one of Japan's main tea growing regions.
This tea is extremely flavorful and delicate with its own umami, a very gently sweet aftertaste and very little astringency. The natural fragrance of this tea is complex, with both floral and slightly malty aromas. This tea can be re-steeped over and over again and lasts a long time.
Midnight Camellia is made from the Tuyuhikari cultivar from Shizuoka Prefecture. The cultivar is mainly used for sencha, although in some experimental and artisanal contexts, it is also used to make limited and rare editions of black tea (also known as "wakoucha").
We found this treasure at a family owned organic farm. The farm has been researching and developing organic farming techniques since 1976 and is not only JAS Certified Organic, but is careful to minimize or eliminate disrupting the ecosystem around its tea farms. The soil in which the tea plants are grown is fertilized with manure from their farm animals, as well as dried rice stalks.
